The UK Blocked Microsoft’s Acquisition of Activision

Posted on April 29, 2023

Microsoft has announced a 10-year deal with Spanish cloud gaming provider Nware to stream PC games on its platform, as well as Activision Blizzard titles if Microsoft’s acquisition of the gaming company goes through. This comes despite Microsoft suffering a setback in its efforts to take over Activision Blizzard, one of the biggest gaming companies in the world.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a statement that the new partnership, combined with other recent commitments, will allow popular games to be available on more cloud game streaming services than ever before. “We are full speed ahead in our mission to bring players more ways to play their favorite games,” he said.

Nware provides users access to their game libraries via the cloud, including games from Steam, Epic Games, and Ubisoft. The service allows users to stream their games on Windows PCs, Android smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, much like NVIDIA’s GeForce Now.

This agreement follows similar deals Microsoft has made with Nintendo, Steam, NVIDIA, Boosteroid, Ubitus, and EE to make its games available on their platforms. However, the biggest opponent of Microsoft’s proposed Activision merger, Sony, has not taken up Microsoft’s offer to keep the likes of Call of Duty on PlayStation.

Despite the setback in its efforts to take over Activision Blizzard, Microsoft remains confident that it can get the job done. The company is reportedly continuing negotiations with Activision Blizzard and is determined to see the deal through.

Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is worth $68.7 billion and is expected to significantly boost Microsoft’s position in the gaming market. Activision Blizzard owns some of the biggest gaming franchises in the world, including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush.

The deal is also expected to strengthen Microsoft’s cloud gaming capabilities, which is an area of focus for the company. Microsoft has been investing heavily in its cloud gaming services, and the company sees it as an important part of the future of gaming.

Cloud gaming allows players to stream games over the internet rather than having to download them onto a device. This means that players can access games on a variety of devices without having to worry about storage limitations or device compatibility. Cloud gaming is also more accessible for gamers who may not have the latest hardware or consoles.

With the addition of Activision Blizzard titles to its platform, Microsoft will be in a strong position to compete with other cloud gaming providers such as Google Stadia and Amazon Luna. The deal will also give Microsoft a significant advantage in the battle for dominance in the gaming market, which is expected to be worth $300 billion by 2025.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s deal with Nware is a significant step forward for the company’s cloud gaming ambitions. The agreement, along with Microsoft’s other recent commitments, will make popular games available on more cloud gaming services than ever before. While the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard may have hit a roadblock, Microsoft remains confident that it can get the job done and is continuing negotiations with the gaming company. If the deal does go through, it will significantly boost Microsoft’s position in the gaming market and strengthen its cloud gaming capabilities.
