According to reports, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are planning a sequel to the hit body-swap comedy “Freaky Friday” after 20 years. A sequel is in development at Disney, and Lohan and Curtis will play Anna and Tess Coleman, a mother-daughter duo. A script for the new movie is being written by Elyse Hollander, a Black List alum.
Based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, “Freaky Friday” has been adapted for the screen twice before the 2003 version that starred Lohan and Curtis. The film tells the story of a mother and daughter who wake up one Friday morning to find they have swapped bodies. The Lohan-Curtis version was a commercial success, grossing over $160 million at the box office.
There was speculation about a sequel in February after Curtis shared a photo of Lohan and him on Instagram. He captioned it with: “It’s Friday. Here’s hoping! Freaky fingers crossed!” On Feb. 26, Curtis confirmed the news in a Variety interview at the Producers Guild Awards, saying, “Nothing officially is going on, but I’m looking at you at this moment and telling you, ‘Of course it’s going to happen’.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Lohan and Curtis revealed the sequel would be coming as part of the film’s 20th anniversary celebration. Upon returning from vacation, Curtis called Disney and said that he felt like a sequel was needed. Lohan added that she and Curtis are “open” to the idea and are only interested in creating something that people will overwhelmingly enjoy.
The new movie is expected to continue the story of Anna and Tess Coleman, but no other details about the plot have been revealed. Fans of the original film will be eagerly anticipating the return of Lohan and Curtis to the screen in this beloved comedy.
