Director Todd Phillips shared a new look at Joker Folie A Deux and released an image showing star Joaquin Phoenix in Lady Gaga’s arms.
Happy Valentine’s Day is Phillips short Instagram caption. The image marks the audience’s first look at Gaga in the film. Gaga also shared the image on her own social media, reports Variety.
Gaga is reportedly playing a version of the DC Comics character Harley Quinn, a psychiatrist who fell in love with the Joker before embracing his evil ways.
Margot Robbie previously played Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Kaley Cuoco voices a character in the current HBO Max animated series Harley Quinn. Gaga confirmed her participation in the Joker sequel last August. This film is called a musical.
Phillips’ original Joker was a critical and commercial hit in 2019 becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and is a top contender for the annual Academy Awards. He received 11 nominations and won for Phoenix for Best Actor and Hildur Guanadotir for Best Original Score.
The dramatic success of The Joker quickly fueled speculation about a sequel. Although the DC media landscape has changed in the years since the original film, Phillips’ project remains largely unaffected by the newly formed DC Studios and their co-directors James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The Joker sequel will not feature in the narrative continuity of any other upcoming DC films.
Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix shared the screen for the first look at Joker Madness for two with director Todd Phillips. An image of two eyes closed was shared on social media on Tuesday for Valentine’s Day.
The actress and entertainer is believed to be playing DC’s beloved Harley Quinn in the $1 billion sequel to 2019’s Joker film. The film also earned Phoenix who played the Joker, an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Warner Bros. announced that Joker: Madness for Two would be released on October 4, 2024 — exactly five years after the premiere of the first film and shortly thereafter, Gaga confirmed her long-term role in the next film.
While Gaga has yet to reveal the role she will play in the sequel, she is said to be playing the prison psychiatrist who turns into Quinn, as the film’s subtitle Madness for two indicates. The French term denotes an identical mental disorder that affects two different people.
The second Joker installment was also intended to bring a musical element to the Phillips-led sequel compared to its brutal Scorsese-inspired predecessor.
